I`ve often heard that AdWords campaigns do not help organic SEO.

I`ve often heard that AdWords campaigns do not help organic SEO. Does this mean that if somebody clicks through to your site through the ad that Google does not count this as a visitor? Or do they just mean that just the act of having an AdWords campaign does not help your organic rankings??

  • Scott Cohen: I've often heard that AdWords campaigns do not help organic SEO. Does this mean that if somebody clicks through to your site through the ad that Google does not count this as a visitor? Or do they just mean that just the act of having an AdWords campaign does not help your organic rankings?
  • Dave Elliott: The latter. PPC doesn't help organic rankings.....unless the clickee then decides to link to your site or share it or whatever, then you could easily argue that it helped organic.
  • Scott Cohen: OK, that's what I figured. So it can have an indirect benefit, but Google doesn't reward you just because you have a campaign going. Does it weight organic clicks vs. AdWord clicks differently?
  • Dave Elliott: there is still a bit of debate as to if clicks are a ranking factor or if it is simply sites with good seo and high serp positions get more clicks. Personally, I go with the latter. As it would be really easy to manipulate that ranking factor!

If you have Google analytics then you can view the source of the click through in the 'aquisition overview' tab in the left menu to see which come from adwords and which came from organic search etc
  • Martino Mosna: There's one strong indirect correlation though.

A good on-page SEO, in combination with a well structured Ad campaign can easily lead to a better Quality Score.

The better the QS, the cheaper the average CPC.

(and vice versa: a landing page that's QS-optimized can lead to better SEO results)

So, yes: a good on-page optimization for advertising purposes can boost your SEO. But not in a direct way and certainly not because of the money invested.
  • Christopher Shaffer: It doesn't directly help your organic seo simply because you are running ads. That being said, traffic levels and engagement metrics (like bounce rate and time on page) do impact your Organic and if you are optimizing for UX than running ads will help you. Additionally, PPC is a fantastic way to test the conversion rate of keywords that you are considering pursuing organic ranking for (especially the harder to rank for ones).
