Is there a need for an XML sitemap?

Hi!I recently joined a project that is about to launch. It`s a single web page application site (publishing site on REACT). I have been working with a programmer on setting up react-ga so I can still track events and pageviews. This will be my first SPA that I`ve worked on. I just (stupidly, maybe) realized that I can`t really think about pre-launch and post-launch work the same way I would any other site. For instance, is there a need for an XML sitemap? Do individual pages or content get indexed and rank? How are 301s handled? Any general advice or resources would be much appreciated! I`m trying to plan ahead for post launch stuff to mitigate traffic loss when the new site launches like normal...and am realizing that normal work may not apply here.

  • Dave Elliott: React and Single page app are two of the scariest words for any SEO. Slightly out of date but my former agency put this together https://builtvisible.com/javascript-framework-seo/ if you are doing a pwa there is a decent guide on that as well...not necessarily the case

Good luck, it`s a massive minefield you are walking through
  • Sarah Adams: thank you so much! I was brought in very last minute and am not very excited about this minefield you spoke of, haha. I truly appreciate the resource, thanks again!
  • Jim Munro: I can`t offer links as good as Dave`s but neither can I think of examples of single page sites that are raging successes.
  • Richard Hearne: Jim Munro you might be conflating "single page website" for "single page application". Not the same thing. You can have literally millions of pages on a "single page application" or SPA, and SPAs can be SEO friendly. They`re just inherently a little more fragile from an SEO perspective.
  • Jim Munro: Fair enough, thank you, Richard. :) I should have known better than to comment on this one. :)
