Is keyword density a significant factor in title tags?

Is keyword density a significant factor in title tags?

Irrespective of the 70 or so character limit, is it better for SEO to have fewer words in a title tag so that, from a keyword density perspective, the remaining keywords are seen as more important.  For example, which is preferred, and why:

keyword or key phrase
most relevant keyword or key phrase | second most relevant or broader keyword or key phrase | third most relevant or broader keyword or key phrase?

  • Greg Baka: Hi +Chuck Bolotin - you are thinking way too mechanically about page Titles. In 2010 it was that way, but things have changed. Also 55 is now a common target for # of characters, not 70. At 70 characters Google is more likely to display some alternative title in the search results.

Forget mechanical. Think marketing | enticing | readability | click-worthy.

How your title displays in the search results is your primary tool for getting searchers (potential customers) to visit your site. Use your keywords somewhere in the title, but make the title be enticing and readable. Make it stand out from the crowd on the page as being the answer they seek.

If you were selling hot air balloon rides over Paris, this would be a lousy Title:
    Balloon rides | Paris
and this would be a great Title:
Romantic hot air balloon rides above Paris | Affordable
because it builds excitement and relaxes worry about expense.
