Incorrect URLs direct back to the homepage.

Need some help! A website I recently took over is set up so that all incorrect URLs direct back to the homepage. I do not know how this was set up to do this? I do not see anything in the .htacces file. Any ideas anyone? I want to stop this for seo reasons. ?

  • Mursel Kukic: What cms is it, in wp there are plugins that do that,
  • Kapil Bhardwaj: you also use Google Webmaster Tool... Its give you option Fetch as Google. This help you to remove incorrect URLs... ;
  • WebFoot Designs, Inc.: In most content management systems, there are plugins to manage 301 redirects. Also, check to make sure the 404 page itself doesn't have a redirect scripted to the homepage.
  • Archie Watt: If there's nothing in the .htaccess file, then the redirects may be happening on the page, for example due to a meta refresh or a javascript redirect.

    As +Kapil Bhardwaj ;mentioned, try using the Fetch as Google tool.  ;That should show you any code on the fetched page that might be causing this. ;
