Google analytics Content grouping questio

The google analytics group failed me so i shall ask here!!

Google analytics Content grouping question: I have just been having a read through these settings and have a couple of questions.

I need to have two main categories for my pages. `wibble` and `etc`. These categories can then form part of 4 other categories(a, c, d, e).

wibble can be be part of any of a, c, d, e
etc can be part of any of a, c, d, e

no page should be part of both wibble & etc.
a, c, d, e are not always part of either wibble or etc

The urls are fairly inconsistant.

What is the best method of setting up the content groupings? Can i do it via the tracking code method? Or will i have to do it via a rule definition and define every page manually? And in fact can i define a single page to more than one content group.

Hopefully this makes sense!!!?

And i can tell i`m going to have so much fun setting this up(THIS IS SARCASM!)

  • Jim Munro: Adding this just in case +Alistair Lattimore ;cannot make it for the Thursday's HOA or maybe +Stephane Hamel ;might have a moment to spare. :)
  • Alistair Lattimore: I've not set this up before but if your URLs aren't consistent, it will make using the regex approach very difficult and error prone - as such I think I'd approach it using the tracking code method.
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: Either way you're going to have to do some coding... either renaming the URLs into GA or use the tracking code method. :/

That or create new URLs ;-)
  • Dave Elliott: yeah the issue was that using the tracking code method i could only get 5 categories and i needed 6! I have however, come up with a cunning plan meaning i only need 4, so that shall be the method i use.

Its only two lines of code on each page i want to categorise, slightly annoying but it is a fairly small site(less than 40 pages) so shouldn't take long!

regex would be essential on a large site!
  • Stephane Hamel: Any given page can be part of up to 5 categories, and based on the comments so far, it seems the best approach would be to use the tracking code.  ;If you use GTM (you should!!!) it's very easy to set.
  • Dave Elliott: only just got round to listening to this properly! Two different profiles...... I hadn`t considered that. Nice, although have just decided to go with a, c, d, e and do some segmenting instead.
