Alan Bleiweiss: Currently https is a tie breaker type ranking factor. Except Firefox and Chrome browsers beginning this year, began warning people visiting http pages with forms on them that it`s unsecure. And Chrome is moving to warn visitors to all http sites, with or without forms that they are unsecure. Which they already do for people in incognito mode. So it`s more than SEO / rankings. It has become a forced necessity for businesses.
