How do they keep outranking my website?

I have a client that just started his business last year. I recently build him a website. It launched late December. I have done basic SEO on the site at this point and am about to start a full on SEO campaign strategy. The client has a competitor that is currently outranking him for most of his terms. This competitor has been in business longer than my client but does not have a website. My client keeps asking me WHY and HOW his competition, with no website is outranking him. How would you answer that question? I have given him my explanation of domain age, and time in business are pretty big factors for Google. My clients business and brand are totally new to the scene for the most part. I did some top 10 local citations and he did not come up anywhere. I had to add his listings to all typical citation sites - Yelp, Yellow pages, etc....Curious as to what you would tell a client in this situation.

  • Kolleen Shallcross: If the competition has no website, do you mean ranking in the maps with GMB?
  • Kolleen Shallcross: Alissa Janiecce There’s a lot of reasons and your client should pay you for a competitor audit: social signals, citations, listed in industry pubs, google reviews, other reviews, etc.
  • Alissa Janiecce: He is paying me but we just started the contract today. He`s very impatient but yes, I agree with all factors you listed and I have explained all of those as well. Just wanted to bounce it off other industry professionals. Thank you for your reply
  • Kolleen Shallcross: Alissa Janiecce Good luck. We started breaking down our SEO audits, and have separated out competitors audits since it can become a rabbit hole.
  • Matt Quinn: Alissa Janiecce a full audit as recommended above is definitely the way forward and would allow you to give client realistic expectations; also note the ranking of the website on SERPS and the business GMB in map pack, aren`t really the same thing, especially in short term/early stages.
  • Alissa Janiecce: Matt Quinn I totally agree. I have him set up in my tools with Competitive Analysis going and keyword tracking, etc.. But again, its only been 1 month and 10 days since launch. IMO that is not a large enough dataset to make any real determinations at this time. I am going to focus on local citations and get some activity going on his social and GMB and utilize geo tagging and any other local tactic I can think of .
  • Matt Quinn: Alissa Janiecce keyword tracking probably going to be quite inaccurate if your focus is local, for the GMB use local Viking or local falcon search grids to see position and competition. Unless your in a low comp niche SEO will take a bit of time to get regular leads, if your clients impatient you probably want to mix in some local service or FB ads. Also if you can work out a way to drive clicks to the GMB it will help the ranking
