Hiding PDF from Search Engine

Ok peeps if I have content on the site and also want to put a link from the page to a downloadable PDF of the exact same content but I don`t want it to be seen by the bots as duplicate content. Does anyone know how to go about using the rel=canonical tag on a PDF document?

John Mueller: You can put a rel=canonical into the response header: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en (you'd probably need to drop that in your .htaccess somewhere)
