Full copy to sub domain - seems strange

This is new to me – seems strange. The website development company have said as part of their migration process they will do a full copy of the site and add it to the sub domain in order to maintain backlinks and domain authority. Surely this is just duplicate content – what do you think? I have been asked to take a look at the site and this sub domain (old website) has been running at the same time as the new site for the last 4 months. Am I missing something/going mad?

YOUR ANSWERS

Selected answers from the Dumb SEO Questions Facebook & G+ community.

  • Mike Martino: Is it duplicate content? Or is the new website different to the old one?
  • James Pybus: only the primary pages are different over 500 pages are duplicated blog posts
  • Rituraj Shrivastava: they must have added canonical tags. Haven`t they?
  • James Pybus: Rituraj Shrivastava no nothing. I guess my question is really - is this now best practice?
  • Rituraj Shrivastava: As per the info you are providing it`s not good. They should have used the older urls in the new site and put the content there or used 301 on those urls to contain the link equity.
  • James Pybus: Rituraj Shrivastava yep, agreed, never seen this sub domain action before. Thanks for your input
