Would basic SEO be enough to get a decent ranking?

I have a website that I use mainly as a portfolio / gallery site, that I update once a month. If I do all my basic, technical and on-page SEO, would this be enough to get a decent ranking? Is there anything else I need to be aware of that could help, other than creating blog content? Thanks!

Richard Hearne: Depends what you want to rank for, and how competitive those keywords are. In very general terms, more content leads to more traffic, so once-monthly cadence on content probably wont do much. YMMV, and really you probably want to provide more context here to get a better response.
