Dumb SEO Questions

Should we nofollow a large number of new files?

Hi guys. At the end of February my company (an ink and toner supplier) starting selling stationery. Check our site out (Toner Giant)

Now because we had around 8000 product pages in stationery and our bread and butter is ink and toner cartridges, we were worried that indexing this amount of pages would be a bad thing (we have about 5000 pages for our core offering). So we `nofollowed` all of them.

Would just like to know if this is something that we should/shouldn`t have done, or how best we could have gone about this?

Thanks?

  • Gareth Marshall: +Jim Munro ;Hi Jim sorry I had to delete the post and write it again as it wouldn't let me remove the URL! But thanks I look forward to hearing what the guys say, too :)
  • Jim Munro: Aah, sorry I had to put you through that, mate. G+ can be annoying sometimes.
  • Gareth Marshall: +Jim Munro ;No probs!
  • Dave Elliott: don't see why it would be a problem! I'd question why you have that many, and might suggest that blue number 2 pencil and red number two pencil could be combined into a single page with colour options(he says without actually looking at your site and therefore not knowing if this is in fact the situation), but there are plenty of sites about with 20k plus pages.(ebay.com has ;30,400,000 results indexed in google, amazon has 295,000,000! they seem to be doing okay)

if there are a load of very similar pages you might want to nofollow certain pages, or get a bit creative with your canonicalisation(or rewriting them and restructuring your site slightly) but nofollowing the whole lot seems somewhat drastic!
