  • Dahlian R. Lamy: Jackin, sounds like what you need to do is a Change of Address. Please see Google`s instructions on what that is and how to do it here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9370220?hl=en

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Ideally, you would change nothing but the name of the web site and then point the new domain to the site, and redirect the old to the new so that it`s a 1:1 match up - every page and every bit of content (except the site/brand name) is exactly the same. Then give Google a few months to update. (You might also want to say in several places "oldsite is now newsite" but no major content or structural changes).

Then, give Google a few months to update that name/brand change while you work on the new site and structure. Then push that live in a second phase.

In recent times, it`s been touch-and-go (even with every precaution and consideration in the world) when making major changes to the structure, theme, brand, domain and all that all at once. Site structure changes are especially finicky - so much so that I try to avoid it lately unless it is an absolute must to fix. Instead, I try to slowly "reshape" it, rather than doing to total restructure and rolling it out.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: "How" you do that redirect is what`s important - not whether you do it or not. Redirects should go from this content was here and this exact same or EXTREMELY similar content is now here. It shouldn`t just be randomly redirected or, worse, just redirecting to the home page.

It would take a full study and analysis to know what the exact answer to this is... and it`s an answer that is normally one you would want to have BEFORE the process started. It may end up being a long year for this site. Or, it may sort out just fine. Hard to say.
