Lazy load or not?

Hello. I have what I think is a very technical question. One of my friends emailed someone else and expressed it this way (he wouldn`t mind my sharing; we are trying to find an answer): You recommended that site owners publish videos to their sites (using Wistia or Vimeo) at least 90 days or so prior to sharing the video on YT so our sites will receive credit for the video. I shared on G+ and +Tina Willis has raised an interesting issue that is far over my head and neither of us can find an answer. We are both on shared hosting with CDN -- A2 and Siteground but still, it`s shared hosting. Due to site speed concerns, we`re considering using lazy loading to load our Wistia videos. Benchmark tests indicate that a site with one Wistia video will load in 4 seconds without lazy loading where it requires only two seconds to fully loaded when lazy loading is turned on. But, articles indicate that G does not crawl a lazy loaded video and could not do so if they wanted to. Assuming this information is correct, would you rather have a site that loaded in 4 seconds and receive "credit" for the content of the video? OR, would you rather use lazy load and have the improved load times? I have not seen anyone address this question. Do you have an opinion? Thanks very much for any insight!

  • Francois-Pierre Marcil: Hello! I don`t think there is a definitive answer to this question: (1) the response will vary depending on the user`s hardware and you are not talking about a large spread of load times. (2) Because the difference in loading times is not enormous, others page elements might have a significant effect on the answer. (3) The creative of the video, the branding of the site, the recurrent nature of the experience on the site, would all be things to look at. Overall: Analysis-Paralysis, push the video without lazy loading and test if it ranks + bonuses. Then monitor the page and video analytics to see if there is a problem with speed, user bounces, time on page etc. You can then use preload, prefetch etc. if you know where the users are coming from, ie. there are others ways to improve speed after the fact. Overall: publish more, think less about 2 seconds differences. My 2 cents!
  • Jim Munro: Hi Tina Willis, I have searched but cannot find the part where: "You recommended that site owners publish videos to their sites (using Wistia or Vimeo) at least 90 days or so prior to sharing the video on YT so our sites will receive credit for the video.", Please point me towards it. I`m not sure that advice can be relied on. I`d like to see if it would stand up to the scrutiny of peer review.
