Large increase on Googleâ€™s meta descriptio

Hello everyone, Has anyone noticed a large increase on Googleâ€™s meta description way beyond the 160 characters for many more of their listings regardless of where they are ranked? Any advice on how to accomplish that?

Neil Cheesman: Yes, I noticed that the `snippets` in SERPS varied (may have mentioned here a few weeks ago) ...
Jim Munro: Forgive me if I am wrong but since the pixel width rather than the number of characters contained is used for the Title, wouldn`t it be safe to assume that the same applies for the description?
Neil Cheesman: What I have seen is not pixel related... (imho) there are far too many characters (need to find an example now)
Neil Cheesman: 287 characters... this is better as it shows a comparison - not sure about the pixels
