JavaScript Main Header Navigation Menu

Is it bad if the Main Header Navigation Menu drop-down isn`t resulting with JavaScript turned off?I checked the rendered HTML in that however, I can see the dropdown items. So can this be ignored or should the drop-down still happen with JS turned off?

  • Michael Martinez: It diminishes the user experience but most users don`t click deeper into a site anyway. If you have other internal links on the page that people can still see they may be more likely to click on those anyway.Haven`t looked at statistics lately but a few years ago less than 5% of surfers had Javascript disabled in their browsers. I suppose it`s mostly people using text-based browsers and screen readers these days. And I don`t know if modern screen readers can interpret Javascript. I think some can.As far as the search engines are concerned, they will render SOME Javascript. If they cannot render the Javascript you use for your dropdown menu, that will impede their crawling of your site. Publishing XML sitemap files can compensate for that, as well as embedding alternative internal links in your pages. If you`re satisfied with the site`s crawling and indexing I would say check to see if the site passes for accessibility. If it does then you probably don`t have anything to worry about.
  • Zachary Toto: yes, you should have a menu that works properly without being JS dependant. Otherwise, you just look like you don`t know what you`re doing. Although most users have JS now a days so it shouldn`t be an issue with many people, but still something to consider.
