It`s about backlinking right?

Hey people. Question:
I have an idea for a website and would like to offer the possibility to get a domain and make it point to my website. In more detail, I want to buy several domains and make parts of my website like individual sites. Lets say a user has his own profile with some photos and data. He pays a small fee and I give him some extra features and a domain of his choice that points to his profile, but as a special site without my main menu etc.
I know how to do this, my question is if this would affect badly the seo of my main website? Anyone knows a way to archive this?

  • Federico Sasso: I guess your concern is low quality user generated content could affect your site reputation. In case your users` space get their own domains, it not an issue.
A different thing would be for the non-paying customer, where their spaces would be perceived as part of the whole of your domain. Proper solution would be to host their spaces in subdomain AND register your domain as an exception in the "public suffix" (publicsuffix.org) registry, to make clear your users` content is not yours and belongs to different entities.
  • Tim Tegtmeyer: Hello Federico and thank you for your input. You answered me some question!!! My main concern is the fact that I will have a lot of domains pointing to my server. For what I know, having too many domains redirecting to my website is not a good idea. You are adressing the users content, I review all this content in order to guarantee a certain quality. The users content is not only text he wrote. I generate this content with complex forms where he can upload images, write a title, description and so on. My fear is that google might penalize me for having too much domains pointing to my website. What do you think about this?
  • Tim Tegtmeyer: No, I dont mean hyperlinks. That would notbe a concern :). What I mean is that I will register a domain on the name of my company and point the DNS to my Server like my main domain. This additional domains will not show the main website, but the users detail page which is only available thru this additional domain. I wont link to this pages directly on my main website.
So what I will get are a lot of domains registered on me and pointing to the same IP. I dont know if I should redirect the requests then to the specific pages or if I can/should make this redirection directly in the DNS of the domain. I have little experience on this.
If I want to push my website in Google results, I can go and buy dozens of domains and redirect to my website, but of course Google will notice this and penalize me.
Now my goal is not to trick Google, but to offer this possibilities (own personal domain) to my users. Did I explain me? English is not my main language, so forgive me if I made it difficult for you to catch the meaning of what I say ;)
  • Federico Sasso: Hi again Tim
(worry not, I myself am not a native English speaker)

My understanding is you are offering a "view" of users` profiles through additional domain, all registered in your name. All profile pages will have different content (although may be similar layout), and different domain names. Just the IP and the registrant would be the same. Is it correct?
I don`t see much to worry about, let`s wait for the DSQ panelists response on that.

Little OT, what puzzles me a little is the idea to register your customers` domains at your name, from a business model standpoint.
  • Tim Tegtmeyer: Thank you Federico, you got it right! I could also register the domains in name of my clients, I dont see much of a difference, at least for me. Then lets hope that you are right, I tell you when I know more, still have to develope the site (I am on it). Thank you for your help, I appreciate it!
  • Federico Sasso: My main concern is the fact that I will have a lot of domains pointing to my server.

Are your clients going to link to you voluntarily from their top level domains?
That isn`t normally an issue, people normally aims to have more.

Is the link forced by your platform?
Such case would be comparable to the (little sneaky) links web development agencies add to their clients sites in the footer "designed by..."; I`d recommend removing it or add the rel="nofollow" attribute.
