  • Michael Martinez: Nick Dynice It really comes down to the intent behind the link and the attribute.

It`s okay to add "nofollow" attributes to "Post a reply" links on a forum or "shopping cart" links on an ecommerce site. And there are other examples.

But if people hope to squeeze PageRank-like flow into a tighter stream for some destinations by using "nofollow" on others, that won`t work and hasn`t worked for over a decade.

Worse, the reason why Google changed how it assigns PageRank is that when people did squeeze the water hose they hurt their sites. It`s best not to try to use "nofollow" creatively on internal links.

  • Nick Dynice: Michael Martinez Thank you.

The reason I want to do it is to minimize the exposure to duplicate content pages.

Our site sells products internationally. In the past we would detect the country of the visitor by IP with a service and show them the price in the local currency and links to local ecommerce solutions. Then we wanted to use Google Shopping. When we went to verify the product listing Google Shopping would check to verify that the page was set correctly and see only the currency for the country that the verification server was located (probably US). Google Shopping required that we have a unique URL for each product in each country. So we made URLs for each country we want to sell in. When a visitor enters our site we redirect them automatically to the URL of their country. However users may also select what region they would like to shop for in our site navigation. But these URL paths by country are for all pages, not just the product pages. Our site is also multiple languages. So now all pages are accessible with any language and region combination in the URL, nearly 240, and we placed almost all of these combinations in the rel alternate hreflang, which was a mistake. It only should have contained a subset of these, and I have identified 40 to keep.

I would just use canonical and hreflang link relations on the pages, if that is practical. It`s really how the search engines want us to manage these kinds of things.

That way your PageRank-like value is collected into a single page.

If you use an internal "nofollow" strategy, you`ll spew PageRank-like value back into the search index instead of redistributing it throughout your site.
