Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Hunter & Hein, Attorneys at Law, PLLC on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 07/10/2015).

Is it going to be duplicate content?

Hi group.  My name is Bill and my wife and I run a small law office out of our home.  We have a small marketing budget trying to compete with very large law firms in our market, so I dedicate most of my free time trying to learn about about SEO and getting our website out there.  My questions is this:

Is it a bad idea to put copies of my blogs on both our wordpress blog site, and and our actual website?  Is this creating duplicate content that will ding us in the eyes of google and other search providers?  I like having the content on our website b/c I often backlink to blogs when appropriate in answering questions, commenting on forums, etc...But I also like having the wordpress blog b/c I use it to backlink to more specific subjects on our website.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Our website domain is: www.hunterheinattorneys(dot)com
Our blog domain is: www.hunterheinattorneys.wordpress(dot)com?

    I hope our community is able to assist you with optimising your site. This will be an interesting exercise, a good solid site in a highly-competitive market.

    I am not an expert but the first thing I would do is move away from GoDaddy to a better webhost. Rackspace is one I admire in the US but there are many others and you might find you that you end up not paying any more or much more to get a better service.

    Please check the report on this link. ;https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.hunterheinattorneys.com/DF5Nye0T . You do not have a lot to do but your aim should be A, A.
  • Dean Ethridge: +Hunter & Hein, Attorneys at Law, PLLC if you make a brief summary of the entire article and use a read more link to read the rest that would be acceptable. Also using short videos are easy ways to write short articles with the video post. Have you claimed all the local directories? That's where I would start and optimize Google plus like crazy. I took a personal injury attorney from number 40 to between 6-8 in Maps in 6 weeks doing those two things. Hope that helps
  • Kartic Bedi: Hi +Hunter & Hein, Attorneys at Law, PLLC ;

    My suggestion would be similar to +Dean Ethridge.
    If you are posting your content on your wordpress blog as well as on your official site too, then this going to be evil for you. google will treat duplicate the one which will be crawled later!

    I would suggest you to keep posting your original content on your Official blog/site and then create a two three lines of excerpt/summery with linkback to your original blog at Wordpress blog. this way you are getting backlinks and traffic form your wordpress blog and also you don't need to worry about the duplicate content. both visitors that are coming to your WP blog and original one are Up to date!

    Hope that clear almost your doubts :)
  • Edwin Jonk: Personally I like self-hosting. Just a quick look at your blog I noticed the tag pages are indexed. These are low quality pages [1]. With self-hosting you can install the Yoast plugin which noindex tag pages.

  • Hunter & Hein, Attorneys at Law, PLLC: Thank you +Jim Munro ;+Dave Elliott ;+Dean Ethridge ;+Kartic Bedi ;+Edwin Jonk ;!  ;I appreciate the time and thoughts here.  ;I like the idea of having the full content on our website and just summarizing on wordpress, and will go back and edit the wordpress site to remove the full articles (and therefore the duplicate content) from prior posts.  ;

    I just finished my godaddy website a few months ago so the thought of scrapping it and having to start over anytime soon is not appealing, but I understand that it is necessary and will likely become more difficult the longer I wait.  ;I am also constantly running into SEO hurdles that godaddy can't handle, which has been very frustrating after pumping all the time into creating the site.  ;
  • Jim Munro: Yes, that is another demerit for GoDaddy, Bill, but you would not have to rebuild all over again. Just migrating your site away from GoDaddy to almost any other webhost on the planet is likely to improve your position. Besides, they are not cheap, they just sound cheap.
  • Hunter & Hein, Attorneys at Law, PLLC: Jim, thanks, that is encouraging.  ;My impression was that I would need to re-build as I am using their "website builder" program.
  • Jim Munro: As long as you have access to your db and ftp directory the site can easily be moved away, Bill.
