Experimenting with SEO

Hi everyone,

I just recently started studying and experimenting with seo and I have a question below.

I created a short url www.abc.com/asia-pacific/en-gb/offices-2015 and one of my colleague mentioned that for seo purposes I should have use www.abc.com/asia-pacific/en-gb/services/investors-developers/offices-2015

So I am now confused. From what I understand, there are no huge difference between short and long url. Would someone be able to help me ? Thank you

  • Constantino Co: Hi everyone,

    I just recently started studying and experimenting with seo and I have a question below.

    I created a short url www.abc.com/asia-pacific/en-gb/offices-2015 and one of my colleague mentioned that for seo purposes I should have use ;www.abc.com/asia-pacific/en-gb/services/investors-developers/offices-2015

  • Jim Munro: Hi +Constantino Co ;.  ;I am not an expert but I've done a bit of this over the years, sometimes with good intentions. :)

    The url helps the crawler decide what your page is about but it's not the only thing.

    I think I can say with confidence that gratuitously adding keywords to your url will inhibit you. Even if all of the keywords are pertinent, try to limit them to arrive at the most human-readable url design for the best outcome.
  • Constantino Co: Thank you ;+Jim Munro ;That's what I thought too and after reading the Moz's seo best practices.

    Right now I am already having difficulty reading and remembering the short url that I made what more if it's a long one.

    On other note, my colleague mentioned that long url helps the user to determine the path of the page but do users normally read the url path? I know breadcrumbs they do.
  • Jim Munro: I'm not sure what your colleague means. I would have thought a shorter url would be easier to determine the path of the page.
  • Aarti Patole: Hi +Constantino Co. URL structure should be very simple. It should be easy to understand and should elaborate the path too. Your friend migt have suggested you the URL www.abc.com/asia-pacific/en-gb/services/investors-developers/offices-2015 as because the URL is explaning the path i.e.Services>>Investors-Developers>>Offices.

    Hope this helps you :-)
  • Constantino Co: Thank you +Jim Munro ;and +Aarti Patole ;Your answers are very helpful. :)
  • Jagadeesh Mohan Kumar Nambiar: +Constantino Co ;For bots, Texts in URL gives an idea what the page is all about. More over the structure of the URL should be easy and search engine friendly. Folder level should be minimum. I would go for something at least investors-developers-offices-2015 so that it also helps with increase in search keyword visibility! ;
  • Constantino Co: Thank you +Jagadeesh Mohan Kumar Nambiar ;Wow that looks much better but due to how our company is structured, we couldn't have those kind of url names unfortunately. ;
