Extension-less URLs

Your Help Is Much Needed!

Extension-less URLs.. Does it affects in terms of SEO? Actually one of my client`s projects (londonhotels4uDOT.com) is in the revamp stage? The site includes URLs that end with .aspx extension. If I choose to remove the extension, do I need to opt for 301 re-direct to save the history of site`s URL.

  • Jim Munro: I am not an expert, +Pulkit Khurana ;but I think it's been generally acknowledged that crawlers are agnostic to file extensions. If you do opt to go that route, I would display both types initially using rel canonicals pointing to the new version and only 301 after traffic slows down to the old version. I think making the change will negatively affect the site stats long-term but I have this same argument with clients often and rarely convince them either. :)

If it affects the site in terms of SEO, I should better avoid it. I don't want that company would bear any loss just because of me.
