Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Kristen Hansen Lowrey on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 01/06/2022).

Is it best to repost them or simply "update"?

Ok quick query I just can’t seem to resolve. When updating old blog posts, is it best to repost them or simply ‘update’? I always put in language advising that the article has been updated but just update it where it is without reposting it as a new article. What’s best practice here?

  • Zachary Toto: Repost if you`re making significant changes, update for minor changes. As to which is better depends on the content of the article and the changes you`re making to it.

  • Michael Martinez: It depends on more than just whether you`re making small or major changes.

If the blog publishes a lot of content, the older Posts are pushed way down in the navigation tree. It takes longer for crawlers to get to them. I call this process "Website subduction".

Now, WordPress (I don`t know about other blogging platforms) will send out a ping for updated Posts. But I don`t know if the major search engines still see those pings. Google has changed how it monitors blog notifications at least twice.

So it`s always helpful to link back to older content on your site from newer content.

You can also try republishing your XML sitemap files (if you have any) with refreshed dates. I don`t know which (if any) SEO plugins will rebuild those files automatically for you.

If you republish the old (modified) Posts, you should redirect the old URLs to the new URLs - or delete them so you can use them again. But you`re still subducting other old content that gets pushed farther down.

  • Rienzi Mosqueda: If it’s just updating no need to do anything other than informing readers it’s updated like what you did.
