I`m facing a dilemma with content siloing approach

I`m facing a dilemma with content siloing approach on a potential content heavy website. The content Silo approach, renders my website to 4/5 sub-levels deep. Here`s how it will be - Homepage > Resources (Link Hub) > Topic 1 (Pillar) > Topic1a/b/c/x (Supporting Pages)I`m concerned about the click-depth (as you can see it`s more than 3 levels). Would this be too much of a bottleneck or should I follow a different approach?

  • Michael Martinez: Click-depth is an arbitrary measurement.Every page on a site is a potential landing page. So how far it resides from the root page doesn`t matter as far as the search engines are concerned. On the other hand, every page is a potential gateway to other pages on the site. So every page has as many click-depths as there are other pages on the site. For a 500-page site, each page has 499 click-depths.They may also land on a page and use the site search tool if one is available. So theoretical click-depths are thrown out the window on the first user engagement on the site.It really doesn`t matter for SEO or for user experience. If the content is compelling and the calls to action are clear and easy to use, people often click deeper into the site.Build the kind of site you feel is useful and interesting, and organize the content according to a visitor`s needs. Formulaic site design is useful for starting out but you should tweak the structure as you go along, and as the site grows.
  • Ahmed C: Thanks a lot for a detailed insight into my issue. Never thought about the click depth in this way. Again, thanks for clearing this up and giving me a different way to look at it. Given my current structure, do you think it makes sense from a user`s perspective?
  • Michael Martinez: Ahmed C There`s no way to tell if an outline works from a non-descript map. If YOU think it works for a naive visitor who has never seen the site before, then it`s probably an okay structure.Only a very small percentage of visitors will look at more than a few pages in any 1 visit.
