The way I like to do these things. is find out all my current rankings, assess the competitive landscape, work out what the hell I would need to do to get to top 3/5 for all the keywords I care about and the long tail stuff I`m fairly likely to pick up as part of the modifications.(links and on-page).

Then work out what is actually feasible to do as part of the contract.

That should give me a decent figure as to what i should expect my efforts to reward. Then i will add a figure that is semi plucked out of the air for what i reckon my tech improvements will bring the site each month(i can guess quite well but its hard to know when things will be implemented and how much a page speed improvement will bring in real terms).

Add all your keyword/tech improvements to last years traffic to take account of seasonality etc then fiddle with the line till you are happy.

    CAVEAT EVERYTHING VERY THOROUGHLY!
