404 pages with no valid 301 targets

Hi Guys, We have a ecommerce store which has old 404 products with some referring domains. If we don`t have similar products to 301 redirect them too, would the next best place be the related category? E.g. if the product is a dress, redirect to the category dresses. Cheers.
