  • Blade S: I don't see any reason why someone would use "/page" instead of the full URL anywhere on the website.

    It's better for SEO to use the full URL. Here's more on the matter - https://moz.com/blog/relative-vs-absolute-urls-whiteboard-friday
  • Steve K: Thank you this is great information to know I really appreciate the quick response as well

    You're welcome!
  • Tony “Tiggerito” McCreath: I was not the only one who did not agree with that Whiteboard Friday as can be seen in the comments. As long as you don't create domain level canonical issues they are identical and which to use should be based on technical reasons not SEO.

    I personally use relative URLs because they are shorter and I don't have canonical issues. It lets me easily develop on my localhost without having to edit URLs when switching to live. And I don't have issues with dumb scrapers. ;

    However I see most CMSs use editors that generate absolute URLs. That's fine as long as people update URLs when switching from test/development to live. A common mistake I see when auditing sites is the presence of links to a development site, and worse, that causing the development site to get indexed.
  • Blade S: Relative URLs are useful when it comes to the development part, but I still believe absolute URLs are better for SEO and other things.

    I've read a couple of articles, which strengthen my opinion even more:

    - https://yoast.com/dev-blog/relative-urls-issues/
  • K. S. Bisht: Agree with +Tony McCreath.. Here is the technical reason for using relative URLs.

    using relative url will decrease your http request to the server and load page faster.

    So it'll also help your webpage to load faster.

    2nd reason is using relative is that Google/search engine can easily define that the link is for the same domain.

  • Tony “Tiggerito” McCreath: +K. S. Bisht ;Unfortunately I have to disagree with your reasons. The form of the URL has no effect on the resulting requests made, which is always absolute. ;

    Same goes with search engines. Relative URLs are always turned into absolute URLs before processing.
