Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Claire Bresnaha on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 04/09/2015).

Where I should put my blog?

I`m quite embarrassed to ask, but my dream is to eventually work as a content writer or ad writer in tech, so I want to get my ducks in a row in my personal website.

I`ve created a website on Weebly as a portfolio of my writing for eventual employers to look at, with links to the publication they`re in.  I`m also planning on beginning a blog about the history of tech and science. Should I start the blog from the portfolio site, or should I keep it as a separate web site and just link to it?

  • Paul Davis: Link to site?
  • Claire Bresnahan: +Paul Davis
    My portfolio site:

    clairebresnahan.com

    Blog:
    Historyoftechandscience.weebly.com
    I haven't gotten the blog going yet, so I can easily start it as an additional page of the portfolio site if that helps SEO.

  • Nebojsa Djukic: Hi ;Claire, if you're serious about your writing I could setup a website for you. If you might be interested in some kind of partnership, just let me know.
  • Masatake Wasa (wasaweb): If I were you, I'd concentrate on one site, with the blog being an integral part of that site. In some ways, you have to promote yourself as a brand, and in that respect, choosing the domain bearing your name makes sense to me. Alternatively you might want to adopt a memorable pseudonym or moniker that people can remember or identify you with.
  • Claire Bresnahan: +Masatake Wasa Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. I'll do that.
  • Nebojsa Djukic: +Masatake Wasa ;I agree.
  • Brett Saltalamacchia: I agree with +Masatake Wasa ;- plus it's not really cool to have a .weebly domain. Employers will look at that and laugh.
  • Nebojsa Djukic: Indeed, a .com domain is "a must-have" ;
  • Claire Bresnahan: will they be able to tell it's hosted on weebly?  ;the address is clairebresnahan.com .
  • Nebojsa Djukic: There is a big Weebly logo in the footer, so I think it's pretty obvious :)

    Shared hosting will cost you a few bucks/month, it's not a big investment. ;

    With your own hosting you'll be able to run a Wordpress website which is much better solution than Weebly thing.
  • Claire Bresnahan: !

    good point
  • Paul Davis: +Brett Saltalamacchia I agree totally. It is like advertising your business from a phone box. Also you have no control over who your cyber neighbours are. If you are serious about your business then get serious about your web site. So many people will judge you by their first impressions.

    Nothing wrong in dreams, they are just ambitions in the making and never be embarrassed about asking questions.
  • Claire Bresnahan: Thanks, Paul.  ;I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to spring for divtag templates or a professional to make it look more professional.  ;Much appreciated!
