Webmaster Tools Questions, as i don´t get it

Hey Guys & TIA! Webmaster Tools Questions, as i don´t get it.A website relaunch was done (not my responsibility, about 4k pages, ~1 week ago). Whole new url-structure, new cms, page content mostly copied. No (!) 301-redirects were done. Crawler spiked a bit last week, but most of the pages have been crawled it seems. Old urls deliver 404. Q1: I see zero 404 errors in GWT. I think i remember some update or so a while ago, that not every 404 will be shown any more in some Google Blog notes. But no errors at all? Q2: I´d expected to see the 404s stick longer inside the search engine results. But actually, after one week, i´ve barely see any left. And the new urls directly appear even without ANY 301 in almost the same position. This seems odd to me? Q3: I´ve been told 72% of all urls have been crawled by google bot. That´s quite a specific number, and i´ve been wondering how to calculate it / if any tool does that? I would e.g. go for server logs.

  • Cody Sharp: Are you sure there hasn`t been any 301s on the server or CMS side? I wouldn`t expect the high ranking new pages to last based on my experience but perhaps the primary domains weight/reputation loomed so large in it`s market that Google has provided a boost to all of its other new links. That`s not something I`ve seen before on websites that do no redirects but that`s probably because the only time I see those folks is when I come in to pick up the pieces when their traffic was in free fall.
  • Dave Elliott: Were all the internal links updated? Were there any backlinks? Does seem odd, are you sure no redirects were done?

In terms of Q3 you need logfile access...plenty of tools will give you the info and breakdown stuff, but, yeah you need logs.
  • Christian Mühlbauer: Sorry for my dumb question Cody Sharp & Dave Elliott. The riddle is solved. I´m so stupid, i looked under errors in GWT not under Excluded. Under excluded you see a sharp rise after the relaunch for "Crawled - currently not indexed". And a tiny rise for "Not found 404".
What still makes me wonder: All these pages were immediately thrown out of the index. I´d expected it to take longer than just a week. And in some tools (searchmetrics, semrush) you see a tiny increase in organic visibility...
  • Cody Sharp: Christian Mühlbauer haha, no worries. I blame Google for making things difficult within their interfaces as I have made similar mistakes. I have found that pages have been thrown out of index a lot quicker than they had been previously in years past but I`ve also noticed that even when they are out of the index, if a 301 redirect is set up within a month or so, the reputation of that original URL seems to still hold. So, it may still be valuable for you guys to setup 301 redirects or at the very least, prioritize the most important pages and set up those redirects.
  • Michael Martinez: Google Search Console isn`t the sharpest tool in the box right now.
  • Christian Mühlbauer: Hmm..and now i notice, they activated some old business url and the whole website is reachable under 2 separate domains, everything duplicates...
