  • Victoria Gitelshtein: You usually do it for checking the indexing of your site by google. But if you have Google Search Console, you dont need this checking at all. All the info about indexing is in GSC.
  • Rob Watts: Depends. If I know a new category has recently been introduced to a site, I might look at /paths to see how many urls are present. GSC also useful but site: whilst old school, is quick and dirty. I also like to use it with the search tools tab to segment by dates.

Handy for looking at big or unknown domains where GSC access isn’t available, and you want an idea of which newly spidered/indexed urls are in play.
  • JL Faverio: I agree, old and dirty but quick and easy too. I do it a couple times a month.
  • Rob Watts: JL Faverio whatever works with your workflow 😃
  • JL Faverio: Rob Watts it`s one of those "don`t have to think while doing it" sorta task. helps keep me from getting bored.
  • Rob Watts: JL Faverio Haha, it depends on how many sites you have to look at and general objectives and time of course. The reported numbers aren’t that reliable and I’ve seen the sort order go a little screwy on occasions and then there’s the capture thing which is a bit of a pain too at times but it’s nice to have it than not
  • Scott Clark: All the time in crawl optimization. Clients rarely realize how much old, irrelevant content is out there until you show them how to site: stuff.
  • JL Faverio: a simple way to show a client when their site has been hacked too.
  • Mathias Pantalonias: With GSC, no need, unless it`s for a competitor I guess.
  • Tim Capper: Not really much unless I am having a quick look at a site to get an idea with what is going on.
  • Flavius Fotea: Also great way to find articles that revolve around the same topic and cannibalize each other.
  • Dave Elliott: I use site: a hell of a lot when i`m doing tech audits. Love using the SERPs for that stuff.
  • Tomas Ignatavicius: Does not matter. Its wrong p.s. Added value. Gsc is also wrong
  • Ross Raffin: How is GSC wrong?
  • Perry Bernard: Same as Dave Elliott, regularly use this search parameter. Quick and easy first indicator of issues often not detected if just looking at the site.
  • Roger Montti: Site search doesn`t use the regular Algo so one must be cautious about drawing conclusions from the results.
