Using CSS to insert images

using CSS to insert imagesIf I want an image to rank well on image search, is it a problem to use CSS background-image to insert the image instead of using tag? Would this kind of image be properly index? I know Google can read CSS, but would this kind of image rank worse then image in ? I know that in one of my client sites only ranked for image in , but is that just coincident or image in tag actually rank better? Let me know your thought and experience, Thanks,

  • E Dieter Martin: Don`t know about the indexing, but one thing for sure. You can`t add an alt tag to it.
  • Michael Martinez: I have never found a background image in Google Image Search that wasn`t linked to or replicated in some way. Not that I look for a lot of background images.
  • Rishi Lakhani: CSS images don’t rank. If you want it to rank it has to be presented as a proper image with correct alt text
