Using aggregated content from other blogs & websites on my own blog.

Hi I have a question about using aggregated content from other blogs & websites on my own blog, how careful do I need to be about Google penalizing me? Do I need to noindex the entire page of a post that is aggregated content or if I simply just show an excerpt of the text and then link to the source of the content is that ok?

  • Dave Elliott: excerpt and link should be fine. If you have concerns run it through something like http://www.copyscape.com/ and see if it thinks it is duplicate content.

Or just add your own thoughts about the article/blog you are steeling from and make it genuinely unique and interesting/useful to your readers.
  • Michael Baggelin: Why risk a penalty? Mention the article and write your opinion about it instead. That grow your own opinion and will attract your own clients ;)
  • Ashish Ahuja: it depends if the aggregated content is a small %age or not the major content of your website then google has no issues with it. Matt Cutt said that on one of this videos (PS: I don't believe everything he says) he was discussing about curation.

Also, if aggregated content is useful for your users with low bounce rate then also google will have no issues with it.

if you want to be doubly sure then use rel=canonical to original website
