Unpublish or Delete?

How do you think is better to proceed with the content you want to be removed? I understand that you want to do a 301 redirect + removed it from the index, but what do you think is better? And why? Unpublish or Delete?

Richard Hearne: You may not want to add a 301 redirect. If the content is "gone" it is often wiser to allow it naturally decay with 404.
