To Blog or Not to Blog?

To Blog or Not to Blog?

I don`t know why but I`ve always viewed having a blog on professional retail sites as being tacky. At the moment my primary money site is strictly business, everything is about what I do or the products I sell. But I`m starting to warm up to the idea of incorporating a blog on my primary site. I believe that adding additional content related to my niche will make my site more relevant, expand my site`s overall exposure, and keep the site a bit more dynamic for Google; which will hopefully help maintain and improve my overall rank.

Before I take the plunge if I could get some feedback it would be appreciated. Should this be done? Does it matter if the articles are outside the scope of my business, but still relevant to my niche? What are some good guidelines for using a blog to improve on-page SEO, or just blogging for your business in general??

  • Carl Harvey: Good question and id love to know what people think
  • Tony “Tiggerito” McCreath: I have the same feeling. Businesses should be writing informative articles and not blog posts. ;

    But it sounds like you have something to say, so say it. A blog can be considered less serious so can wander away from your business scope, and contain a bit more character. In fact I think it is better that it does. Blogs that just promote services aren't my cup of tea.
  • Michelle Dear: I think it depends upon how niche and how obsessed your fans are. Example: let's say you're a comic book reseller and your fans are all obsessed Sci-fi and fantasy nuts who are into cosplay and cons. You may even be B&M and they come to your store to game during the week. In that case, I think a blog would be a good idea, because you have a community. (I fall into that category, even though I'm not into comic books and I would read the blog). If ThinkGeek had a blog, I would read every single article they  ;published.

    Let's say you sell home accent accessories and you are niche. This caters to women, middle to higher income. I think a blog might work here too. Think about what RedBook and Real Simple do every month. They write articles about how to accessories your house, make things simple with decorating, etc. You do the same, but with your own products. ;

    Just depends on what you sell, how sexy it is, and how obsessed your target market is.
