Dumb SEO Questions

The second page of SERP

Has anyone found RECENT data about what % of searchers ever get to the 2nd page of SERPs? All I can find is a big study from 2013 by Chitika, and a very small survey (1.400 people) this year by Moz. Every other source I can find that says something like “90% of searchers never leave the first page of results” is linking to OLD studies. TIA!

  • Brenda Michelin: Here`s one showing no-click searchers vs organic clicks

  • Brenda Michelin: https://moz.com/blog/new-google-survey-results
  • Brenda Michelin: https://www.advancedwebranking.com/ctrstudy/
  • Dave Elliott: That`s the one I tended to cite.
  • Michael Martinez: None of these estimates are reliable because they are aggregating data from limited sources. People click through to the 2nd page for various reasons and they`ll do that more on some types of queries than others. If you could collect 1, 000 of these kinds of studies you would still have a very misleading, biased picture.
  • Dimo Belov: Nice answer.
  • Kathryn Mueller: Michael Martinez I was afraid that was going to be the answer, but thanks for responding!
  • Jane Phelps: Where do you hide dead bodies? Page 2 of Google lol!
  • Roger Montti: Look for studies and anecdotes of percentage of clicks that go to PPC. A significant amount goes there.

You might try getting input from the PPC people or run ads yourself to get an idea of the significant amount of traffic they soak up.

I know from experience that it`s significant.
  • Kathryn Mueller: Roger Montti good idea, thanks!
  • Michael Martinez: The problem with these kinds of studies is that they don`t take into consideration the queries where users do prefer contents on the 2nd page and queries where the users are dissatisfied enough to change what they search for. The whole idea of "X% of users only click on 1st page results" is very misleading.
  • Kathryn Mueller: Michael Martinez that’s what my colleague and I were thinking.
  • Dave Elliott: As if by magic backlinko have just prroduced this https://backlinko.com/google-ctr-stats
  • Richard Hearne: I`d be careful with that. It`s promoted as a "massive" analysis, but it only includes data from "a handful of sites". I`d be a little cautious around that data. Probably still useful, but it`s marketed as something it`s probably not.
  • Kathryn Mueller: Richard Hearne I also thought that was a bit odd. If they only had Search Console data for a few sites, what did they do with the CTR data from the 5 million pages?
  • Michael Martinez: As with other studies of this type, they are analyzing the queries in isolation and not looking at user sessions (which is not possible given the data source they use).
