Quick question about URL structure for a blog

Quick question about URL structure for a blog. Out of the options "website.com/blog-title" or the automatically generated "website.com/blog/entries/category/blog-title", is one more SEO-friendly than the other or does it not matter too much?

  • Jeff Ferguson: Shorter is better for the humans, and Google does like a “shallow” site, and all those extra directories can make for a mess at some point, so best not to bother. SEO impact is probably minimal, but don’t invite the opportunity for trouble.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Shorter is better, but taxonomy in the URL is a good signal to send, too. And it helps create a pyramid of focus from very broad search terms (the entirety of what the blog covers) to more focused with each category level, to super focused on the specific posts. I`m not sure the /entries/ portion of your URL is useful for anything though... though I suppose it may be... what is your purpose/thought behind having that in there?

  • Jo Acharya: Stockbridge Truslow it’s just how it’s automatically generated by the web platform.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: If you have the ability to alter it - I`d lose the /entries/ section of that and keep the rest. Ultimately, you`ll be fine either way.

  • Sourav Ratul: You should keep your URL structure short. If you add categories upon sub-categories, it will make your site much harder for search engines to read and harder for your readers to navigate your site.
