  Can you guys share some of your best ideas for promoting a multi-day CONFERENCE online?  ;We will obviously do on-page SEO and we will connect and engage via SM.
  But, I am torn about whether or not being pro-active (finding forums with the right audience and announcing the conference) will be seen as spammy.
  Any other ideas??

  Why not contact the forum host and discuss marketing opp's on the actual forum. Banner Ad, sponsored post.
  
  That way all the users see it as semi "official and endorsed".
  
  I would also approach all the large sites within that field and look at their ads and sponsored opportunities. ;
