Does anyone know how GA attributes twitter links that show up in SERPs. Does it count as social or organic traffic?

  • Jim Munro: We looked at this last night in the greenroom, Dave, but none of us could contribute anything useful.
  • Jim Munro: Sorry, I meant to reply last night.
  • Dave Elliott: Can't find anything on this. May have to run a test.
  • Jim Munro: I wonder if +Alistair Lattimore ;is awake? :)
  • Suraj Gadage: +Dave Elliott ;Are you talking about clicks received to the Twitter handle in search results? Or clicks received to the link present in a tweet?
  • Dave Elliott: Link present in a tweet that is clicked on directly within the serps.
  • Suraj Gadage: +Dave Elliott ;It should be treated as social traffic (you can experiment) ;because ;Twitter is giving Google direct access to a feed of tweets which makes it much easier for Google to index tweets as they arrive. Though I couldn't find any official statement to support this. ;
  • Alistair Lattimore: +Dave Elliott ;A normal tweet that appears in the search results with a link to a site is going to appears in Google Analytics as an organic search referral. However if the link includes any campaign tracking (ie, utm_source/utm_medium/utm_campaign/..) - it will override the default behaviour and be logged according to the campaign tracking.

    "An interesting question! I just tested several times clicking on a link on a Twitter post in Google search showing for one of our blog posts, and watched it come in through the Real Time function of Google Analytics. Each time, the click was attributed to Twitter, not organic search."
  • Dave Elliott: ....im going to test
