Jim Munro: I think Eric Wu came up with the epitomal migration plan. In brief and from hazy memory it was to keep both sites online as long as possible. Canonical redirect from old to new, page for page and monitor traffic. When traffic on the old site drops away, 301 redirect page for page from old to new.
