  Site usually 1st or second,will Google penalize me or will my site still remain relatively unscathed?

  Google won't penalize you if you are re-designing your website. However, If you don't follow the best practices for website redesign (such as redirects, 404 errors, etc.) then you might lose SEO visibility in search results after new website launch.

  At least I should have control of my website now and the social media buttons will be fixed.Mobile site will be more user friendly and faster.
  I will just have to wait and see but the difference between 1st and 2nd are huge.
