Matija Zajšek: Didn`t you mention it in one of your videos? :) Bill Slawski or something like that. I like Matthew Woodward. And yours work, of course.
Steve Gerencser: You will never know many of the very best. They are too busy working and making money to worry about getting famous.
Ammon Johns: `Best` is such a subjective term. By best do we mean the richest and most financially successful? Do we mean the one that ranks top for "SEO"? Do we mean that inspired the most people to become SEOs themselves? Do we mean the one who, more than any other, made people actually take the industry seriously and be prepared to pay good money? Or simply the one we like the most? Those are all pretty valid, but entirely different criteria, and it`s not even an exhaustive list.
So, we have to conclude that the important part of the question is the "why". And even that why isn`t because of what it says about the person named, but what it says about the style and aspirations of the person nominating.
Ammon Johns: I do however have a nice clear answer on how good we can get at SEO: "Better". :)
