  I think, if your article is worth it, and you think it has a value, better yet post the article first on your own website - rather than giving it away to the 3rd party sites might happen their website can gain traffic or conversion ; through your article, in the end you lose your momentum.

  So What is guest blogging?
  Guest blogging is a great way to establish yourself as an authority figure within your market and build relationships with other bloggers and experts within your field.
  
  This means, if you succeed in this activity, natural links will be a byproduct of your efforts. ;
  
  When it comes to guest blogging, there are two parties involved. So let's understand the expectations of both parties:
  
  First party expectations: Blogger
  1. The writer should be a REAL human being who has social presence and can be found online if searched and can talk/meet over a cup of coffee if required.
  2. The writer should have strong understanding of the subject and can find the content opportunities/add something valuable to the blogger site.
  3. The writer should think guest blogging as “marriage” not “one-night stand.
  4. The writer should act as a blogger brand promoter when the content is published
  
  Second party expectations: Writer (us)
  1. Blogger website should be authoritative in nature. ;
  - Decent social media followers
  - Engagement on the website
  - Blogger website should be quoted/linked by experts
  2. Blogger shouldn't be violating any webmaster guidelines while linking to business website
  
  So if the expectations of both parties are met then you will develop a strong relationship and you will succeed in your guest blogging :)

  Jon Dunn: Yes guest poting still works great as long as you're getting placements on genuine sites (not made for guest post sites), that are both contextually and geographically relevant.
  
  I'm not the type of SEO that only champions the "for exposure" or "for branding" or " for traffic" approach. Links still rank websites and ; building links rather than "earning" links is the fast tracked method to top rankings. Just be sure to not over optimise your anchor texts and to include branded and URL anchors...
