Does "Keyword Cannibalization" really bad for SEO?

Does "Keyword Cannibalization" really bad for SEO? Many SEOs beginners do these mistakes, target same keywords on mutiple pages in meta tags and content. What`re your say on this and what`re your experiences?   P.S. This is my friend`s question who`s doing his first SEO project.

  • Josh Levenson: Myth. Cannibalization is based on the idea that you can control exact keywords you rank for each page.
  • Travis Bailey: I sometimes get multiple first page results for the same query. Oh no! Anyway...
  • Faraz Ahmed: Travis Bailey I saw many times that two pages of the same website ranking on the first page of Google SERP for the same query. Have you seen more than two pages? coz I`ve never seen!
  • Travis Bailey: Yes. Usually for a business name. Somewhat less for the thing said business does.
  • Faraz Ahmed: Travis Bailey Of course, a unique website name as a search query will show more than two pages on Google SERP.But...for example:There is a website whose domain name is "digitallmarting.com" but if I search for "digital marketing" on Google, the website doesn`t even appear in the top 100.
  • Travis Bailey: So you`re not pleased with the ranking of the site, because other sites have multiple listings for various results?
  • Michael Martinez: "Does `Keyword Cannibalization` really bad for SEO?"No. It`s an SEO myth with many definitions.
  • Neil Cheesman: Michael Martinez Surely if you have two pages or more competing for the same keyword or keyphrase then that isn`t `good`? Or am I missing something.
  • Michael Martinez: Neil Cheesman Nope. 2 pages in the SERPs are better than 1. 4 pages are better than 2.But writing 20, 30, 50, 100 articles for the same query is a waste of time. I doubt anyone could seriously say that much unique and useful information about the same idea.Writing a lot of content around a topic space is another matter. You may naturally earn 2 or 3 positions in random queries that way.As long as the search engines are happy to show more than 1 of your pages in their results, why not let them?
  • Zachary Toto: It depends... If you have multiple personalities are you REALLY arguing with yourself, if you`re arguing with yourself? SEs do what SEs do. It`s not necessarily bad to have multiple pages ranking for the same keywords. If it is an issue for some reason, differentiate the content on the pages.

  • Jim Munro: Zachary Toto I don`t want to have a fight about it but I reckon an industry-wide poll might rule out the existence of the concept. You are welcome to try here and we don`t normally run polls.
  • Melinda Paulsell: Zachary Toto I believe Top Hat Rank just addressed this in today’s webinar. They will be putting the recap on their website soon so you may want to check it out.
