  • Andres Felipe Echavarria Henao: Hello I hope that you can help me with this question:
    1)Which keyword is better to use  ;"shoes online" or "best shoes online in Chile "  ;If I choose the long tail, Google will show my page if someone  ;search for shoes online? or is better to choose "shoes online" if I only can have one page for these term?
  • Tony “Tiggerito” McCreath: Shoes online would be a lot harder to rank for. It's not a question of you choosing, it's if your website page is capable of ranking for it.

    More than likely you want to start off with trying to rank for the longtail keywords which are far better focused on your target market. Less traffic but easier to rank for and a higher potential to sell a shoe.

    Those longtail keywords contain your broad keyword anyhow, so you are still targeting it.
  • Neeraj Pandey: OK. So you want to rank for generic keyword but you didn't tell whether your website target market is chile or it is global. Now if your website is Chile based so using generic keyword will help you and so will long tail but it will help only in Chile and if your website is global then this page I mean country target keyword page will rank only if someone searches for this particular country . so in ur website is global and u want to rank on generic keyword worldwide u should use generic only. Now how google understands ur website in which country targeted. There are many sources for google like gwmt setting domain type content and back links coming from.
  • Janaki Raman: I would like to suggestion you take long tail keyword with keyword phrase for easy ranking purpose. Sorry if am wrong. ;
  • Suraj Gadage: +Tony McCreath ;gave a great answer. No doubt. ;

    When you work with big clients, you often see that they would like to rank for both short tail and long tail keywords (could be a case with you). Which I don't see a problem  ;provided you have the resources who could work on an extensive on-page and off-page promotion activities and client has the patience to wait for results. Just on-page won't do the magic.

    But I believe we should always set the right expectation (short term goal and long term goal). In +Andres Felipe Echavarria Henao ; your case shoes online might be a competitive phrase, but there could be some additional key phrases that may have low competition. Initial stage you may want to target long tail queries, but as your website authority grows, you might want to aim for short tail queries.

    Moz has a KW difficulty score tool that tells you how competitive a keyword is in search. According to Moz any keyword with difficulty score:
    10-30% - Non-Competitive
    30-50% - Moderately Competitive
    50-70% - Highly Competitive
    70-100% - Extremely Competitive

    This will help you to prioritize your keywords and use them appropriately during your optimization. ;
