  • Michael Martinez: No. Cannibalization is largely illusionary. But the idea behind it (other than to sell unneeded SEO plugins and such) is that some people don`t want to compete against themselves for the same keywords.

So, it`s kind of pointless to have 2 product pages for the same product. That`s self-competition.

On the other hand, if you have two different models of the same product, or two products with similar names, you`re not competing with yourself.

True cannibalization would be more like, you`ve got an old page ranking well for "apples" and you re-optimize it to rank for "granny smith apples" (instead of creating a new "granny smith apples" page).

  • Bryce Adams: Michael Martinez I’ve been meaning to ask if canabilsation is actually a thing.I (and my competitors) have multiple top-ten spots on Google and wonder about that.I recently got another SEO app and lots of cannibalisation warnings came up.

  • Michael Martinez: Bryce Adams Lots of people think it is a thing. They don`t agree on what it`s supposed to be.

As far as I am concerned, people need to stop letting SEO tools tell them how to think.…

  • Delah Gomasi: Michael always bringing the goods, i haven`t come across an SEO that explains concepts quite as well as you do mate, thank you.

  • Josh Levenson: Never made much sense to me.

  • Christine Hansen: These myths live on and on forever. If cannibalization was a true thing, there would be no websites.
