Your journey with SEO in your beginning days?

Since my total spent hours with SEO is not a couple hundred hours yet, I feel like getting lost by doing everything on my own, excluding backlinks (I have VA for that).Please share your own experience. How was your journey going forward with SEO in your beginning days?
