How do I protect my site from spammy backlinks?

I have a new site I`m working SEO on. I`ve never bought backlinks for it yet today I saw that there`s a whole bunch of supper spammy inbound links which has resulted in a penalty from Google.1. How do I find out who or where these backlinks are coming from - I mean I know the website names but I did not purchase ANY backlinks or make them myself?? I`ve got random 100 inbound backlinks - how do I find out who did this or is it just random spam?2. How do I protect my site from getting attacked like this? Is there a software/tool I can download? Can anyone just spam someone else`s site for the sole purpose of lowering their rankings?3. Can I appeal to Google? The site is new and apparently you might get shadowbanned for 3 months, how do I rectify this issue?

  • Ammon Johns: First things first. Have Google notified you that you have a penalty, or have you simply lost some rankings during all the recent algo changes and are making assumptions?

  • George Georgiadis: Where did you brought them from so other members do not do the same?

  • Ammon Johns: George Georgiadis he already said he didn`t buy them. Spammers link out to hundreds of legit sites in the hopes it will make their spam links look more legit, or at least, help hide the spam like a needle in a haystack.

  • Michael Martinez: "I`ve never bought backlinks for it yet today I saw that there`s a whole bunch of supper spammy inbound links..."

If you`re not doing anything to violate the search engine guidelines, and if you know the client isn`t doing to violate the search engine guidelines, then they are NOT "spammy links."

Link spam "links I don`t know about and that look funny"

Link spam = "links placed in violation of search engine guidelines"

  • Alexa Han: Michael Martinez but can google differentiate it? Because it`s coming from high spam websites

  • Michael Martinez: Alexa Han The people who buy backlinks try to buy them from Websites they believe look "normal" to search engines.

Without knowing what links you`re worried about, I can only say it`s highly unlikely you`re looking at anything you need to worry about.

But you can always disavow them if you feel you can`t let it go. Better to disavow than fret over what Google might do.

  • Alexa Han: Michael Martinez I checked and they`re links from Indian sites with high spam score

  • Michael Martinez: Alexa Han Ignore any SEO tool that scores sites for spam.

It doesn`t sound like you have anything to worry about.

  • Joshua Choate: Disavow the backlinks in GSC.
