Why the old 404 pages continually show up

In GSC, does marking 404 page as fixed say ok, the page is fixed now, you can come back to it? Or if it`s a real 404 of an old page, can I mark as fixed once I submit for removal? The former would explain why the old 404 pages continually show up as newly discovered 404s after repeated removal requests...

  • Steve Gerencser: old 404s are still showing up on old clients sites 5 and 6 years down the road. I tend to only look for new ones and ignore everything I know has already been addressed.
  • Patty Mantaloons: Does `mark as fixed` say I fixed the page, and come back crawling?
  • Steve Gerencser: I think it`s a placebo button that doesn`t actually do anything.
  • Dan Thies: Marking it as fixed doesn`t do anything for Google.
  • Darlene Jaye Hanchett: It doesn`t do anything for Google but it certainly quells the clients for a little while when they yell about them and don`t understand how they have been fixed if they`re still in the list.
