What is the proper way to do internal linking?

What is the proper way to do internal linking so that my homepage and service pages get the most link juice possible? I have a simple site structure, Homepage2 Service Pages20+ Blog Post (writing more)40 Location PagesA handful of other pages like an about page, contact page, etc.Am I siloing the blog posts for a particular service and then have only the top of service post pointing to the service page and then have the service point to the homepage?orDo all the blog posts point to the appropriate service page and then have the service page point to the homepage?OrIs there a better way to do this that I don’t know? Also, what’s the best way to optimize the blog post link ratio. Is if 1 external backlink per 500 words and only one internal link per post for example?

  • Richard Hearne: I think you need to step back. First thing, define "link juice"? What are you trying to achieve please?

  • Demitris Maddox: Richard Hearne link juice means page authority. Page authority can be passed from one page to another via the internal link.

  • Richard Hearne: "blog post link ratio" is a new 9ne to me. Sounds very much like a paint-by-numbers tactic.

  • Demitris Maddox: Richard Hearne by link ratio I mean. What`s the standard amount of external links that let`s say a 1000 word article should have.

    2d
  • Richard Hearne: No such thing exists.

  • Christine Hansen: Are you asking if it is important to interlink between pages of your menu? From `Service page 1` or `Service page 2` to the Frontpage (default/index page)? If so, they are already linked because of the head menu, you presumably have. Remember to point some of your blog posts to your "handful of other pages" that presumably has a low visit. I can`t stretch this enough: About pages are very important pages! You also could find out what 2-4 blog posts performs the best. Find the posts that are closely related to the best performing posts and then link to them. In other words _links between blog posts_. And think about this method when you write your next post: Eg is it going to be a high-performing post or am I placing this new piece under an already existing high-performing post?

  • Demitris Maddox: Christine Hansen Are you saying it`s important to point links to the about page, because it is important to rank the about page?

  • Christine Hansen: Demitris Maddox An `About us` page is not just important, it is _one of the most important pages_ of the entire site. But for some reason, a lot of website owners tend to forget this and make a real lousy about-page(s)... Who are you, what are your vision and mission, what do you do, how do you do it, what are your quality standards etc etc... A real great place to shine and a wonderful possibility to convert if done right. Of course, an `About us`-page needs SE optimization and cross-linking where it makes sense. Think of your potential customers first.

  • Jeff Ferguson: Your homepage usually gets most of the inbound links by default, so it usually doesn’t need any internal linking help (but usually gets it anyway via navigation). Unless the content is irrelevant, you usually don’t need a reason to link to one of your other pages. Occasionally you’ll have a piece of content run the table on authority and it takes some creative thinking to hub everything from there.

  • Dario Ferreira: Don`t overthink it. Don`t worry about link ratios, etc. Link from within posts to service pages whenever it makes sense to someone reading the post.No need to link back to the home page. The header and footer should already have links to it.

  • Umair Hameed: Internal linking should be like A>B>C etcGive internal link to homepage from traffic blog post. Also give to your service pages. Most important thing is internal linking should be on keywords. Not like check more or also read.
