  Michael Martinez: If Google is finding copies of the canonical page on other URLs, you want THOSE pages to use that link relation to tell Google which page is primary.

  Ammon Johns: Canonicals are always good practice. I don`t know if you`ve noticed, but several sharing apps append tracking parameters (UTM codes) to URLs, just like how Facebook adds its `click ID` parameter to any URL you post. To any user-agent, any difference in a URL is a different location, a different URL, a copy. Using canonicals, including self-referencing ones, helps to ensure that no matter what query string is appended to a URL, by whom, or for what purpose, at least Googlebot will understand what the primary URL is, and that it is your preferred variant of URL.
