SEO experts, please guide! Scenario: I have 2 domains "websiteOld.co.uk" and "websiteNew.com" which I bought from "GoDaddy" company.   My website "websiteOld.co.uk" is hosted on a HostGator hosting server.   I have now purchased hosting from a new hosting server "Namecheap" and going to upload my website "websiteNew.com" on it.   If I redirect "websiteOld.co.uk" to "websiteOld.co.uk" only at the domain level on "GoDaddy" and cancel my HostGator hosting service. What will happen then? I am asking because my hosting servers are different companies.   Questions: 1) Now if I visit the old domain. Will "websiteOld.co.uk" redirect to the "websiteNew.com"? (Yes or No)   2) Will the pages also redirect? Will "websiteOld.co.uk/product1" redirect to the "websiteNew.com/product1"? (Yes or No)

  • Christine Hansen: You have to make the redirections yourself. As for 2) you also have to make redirections from old page to new page. Usually I make a list in a document and save it before I go change anything in the htaccess-file. Remember to test in SERP.

  • Tanzeela Ashraf: Yeah, that`s why I wrote this post because I have to write code on the .htaccess file to redirect the pages of the old-domain website to the pages of the new-domain website.

Christine Hansen, So does that mean I can`t cancel my HostGator hosting service?

  • Tanzeela Ashraf: Zachary TotoPlease read Christine Hansen`s comment, then read my "reply to Christine Hansen".

  • Zachary Toto: Tanzeela Ashraf You can migrate your site leaving the structure intact. You point your old domain to your new host.

  • Zachary Toto: If you point your old domain to your new host, your old domain will direct to the new host. You can wipe and close your old host account and as long as you have your old site on the new host, you`ll be able to point the domain to the old site on new host.

  • Ash Turki: If both websites has the same url structure then its easy to make redirects but if the website url structure in both websites are different, you have to redirect each different link manually

  • Richard Hearne: Add both names to new hosting. Set up redirects. Retain old domain indefinitely.
