Various sites that have weird SPAM like URLs

Hi everyone. So I`ve been coming across various sites that have weird SPAM like URLs like this one: https://www.continuumrecoverycenter.com/outpatient-treatme…/ Notice that the website ContinuumRecoveryCenter.com is for an addiction recovery center in Phoenix, Arizona, yet it has that weird URL promoting a site for a dentist in Calgary (copperstonedental.ca) and a kids dentist in Miami (dentalhub.com). When I check both of those websites. I notice that they too have weird SPAM URLs with links to other non-related websites. When I check backlinks for all 3 websites I notice that they get backlinks from websites with that same type of URL structure, it always has a 3 digit number in the URL (https://www.continuumrecoverycenter.com/outpatient-treatme…/). I`ve come across this quite a few times now, and I`m wondering if anyone has any insight on this. Is it some sort of black-hat software that creates SPAM pages for backlink building purposes? FYI - Whatever it is, it`s working. These sites have keyword ranking improvements and organic traffic improvements in a short period of time.

  • Michael Martinez: They`re trying to rank for local queries. It LOOKS to me have apparently fallen for two mistaken beliefs:

1 - That putting keywords in the URL has a significant impact on rankings.

    In reality it`s minimal.

2 - That they can optimize for "near me" queries by putting "near me" on the page (and in the URL).

This kind of works where the geolocal search algorithm doesn`t kick in. That is, if Google realizes that people are searching for a business in their general location, it will try to determine where they are physically and cross-reference that location with nearby businesses or addresses.

It acts like a normal query if the system doesn`t recognize it as a geolocal search.

A lot of people are trying to do this. Some have reported success, but while it`s not a black hat strategy it`s more of a loop-hole exploitation.

NOTE: I don`t know enough about Canadian/British Columbian addresses and postal codes or whatever to interpret the 6-digit number.
